My name is Landon Defever. I’m a 32-year-old technical writer, but ever since I was a 6-year-old freeloader, I’ve been fascinated by movies. Ask my parents and they’ll regale you with endless stories of my early obsession. I would do everything from rewinding copies of clamshell-housed VHS tapes to rewatch the previews ad nauseum (no pun intended) to writing down all of the movies featured on Dish Network’s pay-per-view guide with detailed stats. The first film I remember falling in love with was Joe Johnston’s 1995 film Jumanji and my taste has expanded into multiple genres since those early days. Something about film made sense to me back then, and it’s extended well into my adult years.
Over the past 15 years, my freelance bylines writing about film and music (my other love) include Substream Magazine, Riot Fest, The Rolling Tape, The Morning Sun, and The Valley Vanguard. However, it wasn’t until March 2021 that I decided to start my own podcast: Films for the Void! Beginning as a collective effort between my college friend Eric Spitz and I, the two of us discussed new releases appearing in theaters, along with a main topic film discussion that we alternated selecting every two weeks. After 100 episodes, Eric left to pursue other opportunities, but Films for the Void continues on with regular guest appearances from some of my closest film friends and fascinating figures in the entertainment industry.
In addition to the podcast, I started a Substack, where I post regular film reviews of new releases and editorials multiple times a week. Over at my Substack, you’ll find reviews of all genres and backgrounds, from action to comedy, international films to independent cinema.
When I’m not seeing or writing about film, I’m attending concerts (pop punk / emo / hardcore / everything in between), spending time with my incredible friends and girlfriend, thrifting, traveling, or hanging with my cat Richard (named after one of my favorite directors, Richard Linklater!)
