John Serba has been a professional film critic for more than 20 years, although sometimes that feel like two or feels like 40, depending on the day. He currently freelances for Decider, writing an average of 400 reviews a year, because he doesn’t know how to do anything else. Previously, he was lead film critic for The Grand Rapids Press and MLive.com, with bylines in many other outlets affiliated with Advance Publications — and then the newspaper business did what the newspaper business does as of late, nudging him out and not bothering to hire another film critic. Too bad for them, right? When not watching movies, John works at a brick-and-mortar record store, profligates a borderline-unhealthy fanaticism for heavy metal, brushes cat hair off his pants, spends time with his wife and son, and tells people the story about how Werner Herzog hugged him on his birthday.
